The Correct Installation Sequence

In most residential construction, the exterior stucco system is installed before the interior sheetrock (drywall). Here is the typical order:

  1. Framing: The wall framing is completed first, providing the structural skeleton
  2. Weather Barrier: Building paper or house wrap (like Tyvek) is applied to the exterior
  3. Exterior Lath: Metal lath or wire mesh is fastened over the weather barrier
  4. Stucco Scratch Coat: The first coat of stucco is applied to the exterior
  5. Stucco Brown Coat: The second coat levels and smooths the surface
  6. Interior Sheetrock: Drywall is hung on the interior walls
  7. Stucco Finish Coat: The final textured or smooth coat is applied to the exterior

Why Order Matters

Installing stucco before sheetrock allows the exterior envelope to be sealed against weather while interior work proceeds. The stucco scratch and brown coats need curing time, so starting them early keeps the project timeline efficient.

Common Mistakes

  • Installing sheetrock before the weather barrier is complete, risking moisture intrusion
  • Rushing the stucco curing process, which can cause cracking
  • Not installing proper flashing at windows and doors before stucco application
